A chimney sweep is a full mechanical cleaning of the flue, smoke chamber, and firebox, paired with a Level 1 visual inspection of the chimney's accessible components. We seal off the fireplace opening, run rotating poly or steel brushes through the flue, and vacuum the system with a HEPA-filtered chimney vacuum so soot stays out of your living room. While we're up there we check the cap, crown, flashing, liner, and damper, and document anything that needs attention.
Burning wood deposits creosote on the inside of the flue. Creosote is highly flammable, and a heavy buildup is the direct cause of chimney fires that can spread into the wall framing and structure of the home. Annual sweeping keeps creosote at safe levels, gives you an early look at masonry or liner problems, and is one of the conditions most homeowners' insurance policies expect you to maintain. It also keeps the fireplace drafting properly so smoke goes up the flue, not into the room.
Sweep the chimney once a year, ideally in late summer or early fall before the burn season. Schedule sooner if you're seeing black flakes in the firebox, smoke pushing into the room, an oily or barbecue-pit smell on humid days, animal noises in the chimney, or you've recently bought a home and don't know the maintenance history.
